In 1972 I was in graduate school at the University of Alabama. While sitting in “The Chucker” (an infamous biker bar) I saw Lilias Falon (Lilias Yoga & Your Life) doing hatha yoga on the tiny black and white television in the corner. That moment was my first step on this 41 year exhilarating constant changing relationship with yoga. The nearest teacher was 50 miles away in Birmingham.
In 1987, the Yoga Center (first one in the state of Alabama) was opened in “David’s Gallery”. It took 4 years to get a sign permit; the word “yoga” was too scary! Now yoga has become mainstream and many styles have evolved. There are numerous teachers and studios carrying on the tradition. There are even certification agencies.
So Kathy Keane, Sharon Wood and I have decided to close the Yoga Center. We have learned the art of letting go and impermanence of all things. As it says in The Bhagavad Gita: “Do your work, then step back – that is the path to serenity.” Om Shanti ~ Namaste
